Cooking the Common Core
Bringing Educational Standards to Life in the School Garden
The first workshop of its kind in San Francisco, Cooking the Common Core is designed to give 4th and 5th grade teachers and garden coordinators all of the skills and tools they need to offer engaging, standards-based cooking lessons for students in the outdoor classroom.
Whether it is using multiplication tables to scale a recipe for four to feed the entire class, or following the steps of a recipe presented orally, the Common Core Standards in English language arts and mathematics naturally come alive through cooking.
This three-workshop series will provide a fun, creative avenue for participants to learn new techniques to reach students with a variety of learning styles, encourage healthy habits, and gain confidence in the outdoor classroom.
The interdisciplinary lessons being offered meet the academic standards in at least two core subjects and will include variations for teachers who wish to expand the activity into multiple class sessions, or use the cooking exercise to meet other core standards. During the workshops, teachers will participate in a hands-on cooking class for each recipe, which will include an in-depth explanation of the ingredients, materials, and procedures. Participants will cook and eat together. Lunch is provided.
February 17, 2012 - Day 1: Use Your Noodle will feature the recipes "Handmade Fettuccine" and "Vietnamese Salad Rolls."
March 16, 2012 - Day 2: Transformers will feature the recipes "Vegetable Fried Rice" and "Brassica Slaw."
April 6, 2012 - Day 3: Under Wraps will feature the recipes "Quesadillas Verdes" and "Divine Dumplings."
Priority registration is given to SFUSD teachers and green schoolyard coordinators who work with 4th and 5th grade students in the outdoor classroom. If you are a 4th or 5th grade teacher or green schoolyard coordinator who teaches these grades, please register here.
If you do not work directly with 4th and 5th grade students in SFUSD, please email joyce AT sfgreenschools DOT org to be placed on the waiting list. We will contact you should space become available.

The training will include four days of AVID ELL professional development to support middle and high school content area teachers in developing the skills necessary to teach language while teaching content. It is designed to show teachers how to build effective, interactive EL strategies into your content curriculum. This workshop is ideally for math and science teachers, but other content teachers are welcome.
Preference will be given to teachers whose schools send teams of three teachers, have AVID in place, are willing to share what they learn with others at their site, and sign up first.
All teachers of English Learners, regardless of subject, must focus on language development while teaching their content area. This training will show you strategies you can use to teach students to read, write and collaborate (listening and speaking) more effectively so they can better access content and demonstrate comprehension.
Overview: The workshops will focus on a framework of effective methodologies for writing, inquiry, collaboration, and reading (WICR) through the use of hands-on activities focusing on rigorous instruction for all students. Foundational teacher beliefs as well as a discussion of the teacher’s role in creating updraft for all students will be explored. The workshop series will enhance the district’s curriculum and make connections to increase subject matter comprehension and foster a positive learning environment. As a result of attending the training, participants will be able to increase equity and access for students by implementing these strategies in a positive learning environment.
Instruction: Will include the following, connecting the effects of each on student learning: Social Contracts - Student-centered instruction - Adolescent brain development and the role of the affective filter - Language Registers - Discourse Patterns of teachers and students - Effective instruction using an inquiry-based model - Costa’s Levels of Thinking - Academic Vocabulary instruction - Student engagement - Reciprocal Teaching - Cornell Notetaking and the Brain - Socratic Seminar - Teaching reading and writing with dance, play-doh, chants, and paper bags

How do I teach the 2nd Specialized ELD class for Long-Term ELs? Long Term ELs should be concurrently enrolled in an ELA class.
Learn strategies for a course designed specifically for Long-Term ELs, sometimes called “Academic Language Development.” This course focuses on powerful oral language development, explicit literacy development, instruction in the academic uses of English, high quality writing, extensive reading of relevant texts, and an emphasis on academic language and complex vocabulary.
Teachers who attend must implement the new English 3D curriculum in their Specialized ELD course.
The actual course titles may vary from school to school, and be called reading, academic literacy, expository writing, etc. However, the course should focus on writing. This is not an intervention course. It is a high level academic course designed to advance Long-Term ELs ability to utilize academic English to be successful in grade-level and College Preparatory Classes.
